THURROCK Council’s cabinet meeting scheduled for this evening is to be opened and then adjourned following the death of Councillor Andy Smith.
Mr Smith, Labour representative for West Thurrock and South Stifford, died yesterday aged 64.
Council leader, John Kent has now announced the Cabinet meeting will be rescheduled to Wednesday, August 27 at 7pm.
Councillor Kent said: “The agenda for Wednesday evening’s meeting is a very important one and we had to think very hard abouit what to do. In the end it seemed only right that the meeting should be postponed – but only for as short a time as possible.
“The easiest and least bureaucratic way of doing this is to officially open the meeting at 7pm, and then adjourn.
“I suspect Andy – were he able to tell us – would have wanted us to continue, saying life goes on, but many members of cabinet, myself included, counted Andy as a personal friend and it would be difficult to concentrate properly on the important decisions we’d have to take.”
