WOMEN are being invited to break the through the glass ceiling of port work and climb to the top of London Gateway’s new high-tech cranes.
DP World has announced a further 50 jobs at its newly-opened international container terminal and wants as many women as men to apply for the terminal operative positions, which involve ‘manning’ cranes and vehicles to move good from ship to shore.
DP chief executive Simon Moore said: “We have a number of women in our team, but not as many as we would like – and the stereotypical view of what a port is like couldn’t be further from the truth.”
One of these is former beautician Nicki Allabush from Stanford-le-Hope, who has been a terminal operative for 18 months.
“I absolutely love the challenge that this job offers,” she said. “I thought, if men can do it, women can too.
“I also like the shift work and the pay is good, plus I feel valued as part of a friendly team. There are great facilities, including a fantastic gym, canteen and lots of fun social activities.”
Details on the job, which has a starting salary of £25,700 and requires a driving license and GCSEs in maths and English, can be found at www.londongateway.com/careers
