Councillor: Vet rubbish dumpers or you could be prosecuted

RESIDENTS have been warned by the council that they could be prosecuted if they pay someone to dispose of their rubbish who then dumps it.

Councillor Phil Smith made the warning during a meeting of Thurrock Council at the Grays civic offices yesterday in response to a question from Orsett councillor Sue Little about what the council was doing to tackle fly-tipping.

Councillor Smith responded: “House owners need to understand that if they pay someone to take rubbish away and they subsequently throw it in the street somewhere, we will identify it back to the home owner and we will prosecute the homeowner along with the person who did the fly-tipping.”

He also told the meeting there had been 395 incidents of fly-tipping dealt with by the council in the first few months of the year, which was increase from 288 in the same period last year.

However he said the council was seeing some success with the six covert cameras it had placed in fly-tipping hot spots around the borough, accompanied by signs stating the fact, with the result that fly-tippers had largely stopped dumping in those areas.

“These criminals are in it to make money so let’s make it not worth their while to do it,” he added.

Having read the article - Disgust at Travellers' Rubbish - and then read this article, forgive me for being cynical. It appears as though innocent householders are going to be held at fault, for example, if somebody knocks on the door and offers to clear some rubbish, how would you know if they were fly tippers or not? Perhaps Thurrock Council can give some guidance on this? It appears to me that this is an attempt to shift the blame from "do-as-you-likeys" to respectable members of the public who quite innocently and inadvertently pay people to remove their rubbish.

More PC and more Cultural Marxism, let's put this blame where it really lies, eh?

STG nail head hit.
Not being funny if the council collected additional rubbish FOC then people wouldn't feel inclined to either dump it or pay someone who may do the same for a lot less. The council website says £26.78 for up to 3 bulky items and ask for a quote for more. So if some comes round and says I'll get rid of that lot for £25 no questions asked ...
But as said our travelling communities seem able to flout rules and regs without fear.
I noticed that on the field alongside Claudian Way has got some "caravaners" on it again and they've been there for a couple of weeks.

If the council collected the rubbish full stop it would help. Leaving it for weeks at a time doesn't help anyone.

Thank you for demonstrating ecm's point so graphically.
I didn't know that Thurrock has so many Onanists, like your good self.
