This live event has finished

  • Full time: Thurrock 0 - 2 Portsmouth
  • Ship Lane
  • Pre-season friendly
  • Pompey name a strong side, while Thurrock's new signing Lamar Reynolds starts up top
  • Westcarr gives Pompey a first half lead

And that's it!

A resilient display by Thurrock...but not enough. A Westcarr brace was enough for Pompey to take victory here!

Offside flag goes up against  Barcham. More decent football by Pompey

Ryan Bird's back post header hits the bar! Great ball in from the right by Barcham.

Walker makes a hash of clearing the ball under pressure. It goes straight to Close but he  can't direct the ball into an empty net.

Then Alex Wynter hits the post as the resulting corner is cleared to him.

Nice play down the left by Thurrock, with Clark and Sutton, but no one can convert Sutton's low ball across.

The game's petering out a little here with 15 minutes to play. Pompey looking much more like grabbing a third than Thurrock look like mounting a comeback

Wynter with another miss at the backpost. This time the ball bounces over.

Holmes gets to the byline and cuts it back but Close shoots wide.

An unmarked Alex Wynter heads over. He should have made it three.

Honeness plays in a free kick for Fleet, the ball is headed clear. Remi Sutton whacks it over.

Great pace from Barcham, but Bird can't turn home his cross.

Callum Ibe comes on for Charlie Stimson.

And there are wholesale changes for Portsmouth now. Ben Chorley and Nicky Shorey among those.

Charlie Honeness finds himself in some space, 30 yards from goal. But he blasts it high and wide.

Excellent build up play by Pompey. Patrick Agyemang picks out Miles Storey with a lovely pass, the winger's shot is then blocked. Nice build up!

Tarbuck is limping off here. Just five minutes since starting. Ricky Holmes comes on in his place.

Pompey's Bradley Tarbuck is down. He was holding his right ankle. The physio's on now.

Reynolds crosses  to the back post, but King can only head it over.

Reynolds crosses  to the back post, but King can only head it over.

There'll be a corner for Fleet here...

Super tackle by Rod Gilman on Ageymang on the edge of the box.

Charlie Honeness is another to have entered the fray for Thurrock as we get back underway here.

Bradley Tarbuck is also on for the visitors. Jordan Clark has come on for Fleet, meanwhile.

Andy Barcham is on for Jed Wallace. Ben Close is also on.

So the sides reemerge here. Most of the Pompey squad had stayed out on the pitch.

Expect plenty of changes....

So that ends a mildly entertaining first half.  Thurrock held Pompey at bay for half-an-hour, but Westcarr's quick-fire brace means Fleet trail by two at the break.

Thurrock 0 - 2 Portsmouth

Now Westmough heads Westcarr's corner to the far post just wide.

Thurrock retrieving possession well as they look to get a goal back before half time. Reynolds goes down in the box, but no penalty says Nigel Lugg, the referee.

Now Westcarr shoots over after some patient build up play, with Atangana involved.

It's 2-0 and Thurrock have a mountain to climb now. The ball is played out to Westcarr, who cuts in off the right and curls the ball home with his right boot.

GOOAAL!! Thurrock 0 - 2 PORTSMOUTH - Craig Westcarr, 39'

Good response to going behind by Thurrock. They're playing with a little more tempo in the final third, but still can't create an opening.

The ball falls for Craig Westcarr on the edge of the box, he strikes it first time on the half volley and it beats Walker, going in off the post.

GOOOAAALL!!! Thurrock 0 - 1 PORTSMOUTH - Craig Westcarr, 33'

Lewwis Clark nicks the ball in the middle and makes for goal, but his ball through is poor.

Many misplaced passes so far in this game. Neither side able to find a rhythm, as Westcarr and Wallace link up but to no avail as Wallace's cross is cleared.

There's a din coming from one end of the ground - as the Pompey fans brandish the drums, trumpets and bells.

Bit of a mix up in the Thurrock box, with Westcar wriggling to make space for a shot. But he was denied.

Good run to the byline by Jed Wallace, his cross is blocked...corner for Pompey...

Charlie Stimson finding pockets of space between the Pompey midfield and defence, but not getting much time when the ball lands at his feet.

Cross from the right by Storey - a decent cross, too - Walker flaps at it but the referee gives a free kick

Reynolds gets a cross in from the right for Thurrock, but Whatmough clears.

Even game so far. Thurrock not over-awed by their pro opponents. Pompey have carved the best openings, but no clear-cut chances as yet.

Ertl meets a Wallace corner with his head, but it's straight at Walker.

This is the Pompey line up:

Jones; Wynter, Webster, Whatmough, Butler; Wallace, Atangana, Ertl, Storey, Agyemang, Westcarr

Thurrock kicking from right to left.

Agyemang gets in an early shot but it's high and wide.

It should be noted, the Portsmouth teams given at the outset of this evening's courage is not the Pompey starting line up.

We're up and running!

Thurrock Gazette:

And here are the teams! We're minutes from kick off here.

Thurrock Gazette:

And here is the Thurrock squad warming up.

Thurrock Gazette:

Pompey warming up on the Ship Lane turf.

The evening sun's beating down - it's going to be a warm contest, this.

Ship Lane continues to fill up steadily. A fair few blue shirts around, with a good number of the ever-loyal Pompey following having made the trip north.

Fleet are having to come to terms with the loss of full back Mark Onyemah today. The hotly-tipped youngster has signed for Pompey's fellow League Two side Luton Town.

So that's a strong Pompey side. Jed Wallace and Craig Westcarr probably the pick of the bunch. Bound to keep Thurrock busy!

But with new signing Lamar Reynolds up top and the artful Brad Warner in the side, Fleet will hope to give Portsmouth a thing or too to think about themselves.

Here are the teams:

Thurrock: Walker; Clark, Sutton, Gilman, King; Stuart, Warner, Spence (c), Reynolds; Stimson, Clark.

Subs: Moore-Azille, Clark, Honeness, Ibe, Martin, Rome, Goode, Williams.

Portsmouth: Jones; Wynter, Butler, Ertl, Webster; Whatmough, Wallace, Atangana, Storey; Bird, Westcarr

Subs: Awford, Bass, Devera, Close, Shorey, Chorley, Hollands, Barcham, Tarbuck, Holmes, Agyemang.

It's a glorious evening at Ship Lane. The pitch, with a circular pattern in the grass, rippling out from the centre, looks immaculate.

The ground is filling up nicely.

Good evening!

And welcome to the Thurrock Gazette's live coverage of this pre-season clash between Portsmouth and Thurrock.
