SOUTHEND High School for Girls’ hurdler Michelle Hughes admits she doesn’t know if she’ll continue with the long hurdles despite being crowned English Schools champion.

Hughes stormed to a gold medal in the intermediate girls 300m hurdles, crossing the line in a personal best time of 43.25s.

Twelve months earlier Hughes was contesting the 80m hurdles final at the English Schools Championships but made the switch up to the long hurdles after setting some blistering early season times.

But with the distance set to increase from 300m to 400m next season as Hughes goes up an age group, she is not sure what she’ll be focusing on next year.

“We will have to see,” she said. “Obviously the distance goes up next year so I will have to think about it. I want to win races obviously and that’s why I stepped up this year.”

Hughes led the final from start to finish but admitted she was grateful it was only a 300m race this year as she was tiring as the line approached.

“I was so glad to see the line,” said Hughes. “I knew I was being closed down by Devon (Brimecome, who won the silver medal) and I was expecting that, but I couldn’t do anything because I was so tired.”
