ESSEX dominated the East Anglian Schools Multi-Event Championships at Corby, winning all the team events and winning 11 individual medals.

The junior boys team were particulary dominant with Rayleigh’s Rob Runciman leading a one-two-three at the top of the leaderboard.

Runciman amassed 2,537 points to win the penthatlon despite not bagging big points in his strongest event, the high jump.

The Sweyne Park School pupil had a ding-dong battle with his Essex team-mates Spencer Owen (Southend High School for Boys) and William Adeyeye (William Edwards) for the medals, with matters only being settled in the final event, the 800m.

Adeyeye was leading going into the final two laps but found himself in third after everything was calculated with Runciman (2m 22.6s) jumping from silver to gold and Owen’s fine run of 2m 13.7s propelling him from third to second.

FitzWimarc School’s Kris Brown was the champion in the intermediate boys octathlon, racking up 4,415 points.

He took the lead after the third round, when he threw the javelin 44.28m and despite slipping back to second after the high jump in round six, he quickly regained top spot in the shot and held on to secure gold.

Cecil Jones College pupil Keiran Pottle (3,888 points) won bronze after leading in the early stages thanks to his fine long jump of 6.23m, just holding off the challenge of Southend High School for Boys’ Bradley Barrett (fourth, 3,842 points) and Eastwood School’s James Regan (fifth, 3,801 points).

Rayleigh’s Josh Prentice (Shoeburyness High) won a bronze medal in the senior boys decathlon with his score of 4,823 points with Seevic’s Sam Shoyeju just missing out on the medals, finishing in fourth with 4,791 points.

Thurrock’s Chay Clark was the gold medallist in the senior girls heptathlon, with a fantastic final 800m lifting her from fourth to the top of the podium.

Clark started well, topping the leaderboard after the high jump (1.61m) in round two, but had slipped back to fourth after the penultimate event, the javelin.

But her time of 2m 21.2s in the 800m lifted her to 4,232 points and powered her above her Essex team-mate Amy Richards (4,141 points).

Harlow’s Naomi Harryman won the intermediate girls heptathlon with 4,924 points after a battle with Essex team-mate and Southend High School for Girls pupil Michelle Hughes (4,784 points).

Hughes started the stronger and led after four events (the 80m hurdles, high jump, shot and 200m), but Harryman bagged big points in the long jump and stayed in gold medal position for the rest of the competition.

Beauchamps School’s Charlotte Skeggs just missed out on a medal, finishing in fourth with 3,748 points while her Basildon AC team-mate Kiera Tippett (King John) was ninth with 3,305 points.

In the junior girls pentathlon, Michelle Hughes’ younger sister Mayi also won a silver medal (2,607 points) with Southend High School for Girls’ Hannah Badger finishing an agonising three points off the top three in fourth with 2,555 points.
