Don’t let burglars ruin your summer: that’s Thurrock Council’s message to local people.

Phil Smith, portfolio holder for public protection, said: "Burglars are opportunistic and our eagerness to soak up the sun or keep cool can provide them with more opportunities to do wrong. Before enjoying the sun at home or abroad we should think carefully whether we have secured our homes, cars and other possessions.

As part of the community safety partnership, the council is backing a checklist reminding residents:

*To lock any doors or windows you cannot see

*Not to leave car windows or sunroof open

*Not to leave valuables in cars on display

*To secure sheds with padlocks

*To make your home appear occupied when on holiday, including using a timer switch for lights.

Burglars can strike at any time but most burglaries can be prevented by securing your home.
