DIVERSITY duo Perri Kiely and Jordan Banjo were in Grays on Saturday to show their support for Thurrock Council’s latest health kick initiative.

The Britain’s Got Talent winning dance troupe duo are backing Beat The Street, a scheme bidding to get people walking and battle the borough’s bad health habits.

The scheme, already a success in Reading, will see residents tap cards - similar to Oyster cards used in London - on “beat boxes” fixed to lamp posts as they walk.

Every walk earns points for the walker’s team which can eventually be swapped for prizes or cash for charity. Over 1500 people are already signed up for the competition.

Splash winner Perri, who lives in South Ockendon, and Jordan, were handing out signed maps and cards.

Steve Liddiard, Thurrock’s new mayor, joined the crowd of more than 200. He said: “I’m really proud that local people have taken Beat the Street to their hearts. Activity is crucial to good health and this game is proving how much fun it can be. We are well on our way to hitting the target.”
