PUPILS from The Gateway Academy in Tilbury were out cleaning up the area around their school on Friday.

Pupils in Years Seven and Eight took part in the school's fifth Community Day in which they targetted the Daisy Field Tilbury Recreation Ground in the morning and Heath Place Fields, Heath Road, in Chadwell St Mary, in the afternoon.

With equipment supplied by Thurrock Council's environment team - including litter pickers, gloves, high-viz vests, and black bags - the youngsters set to work.

The council's Street Cleansing Services made sure everything collected was disposed of properly, and its waste and recycling education officer was also on hand to discuss the hazards of littering.

The morning session collected 22 black sacks of rubbish - and a mop! In the afternoon a further 13 bags of litter was removed.

The event was part-sponsored by Mcdonalds' West Thurrock which provided bottles of water and bags of fruit for all involved and it was organised by Jill Bacon and Lorraine Fugi from Gateway Academy.
