THE Harris Primary Academy has been judged "good" by Ofsted...just under two years after it opened.

The primary school, which neighbours the "outstanding" Harris Academy Chafford Hundred secondary school in Mayflower Road, was visited by inspectors at the start of May.

Just weeks after opening in late 2012, the school was deemed to "require improvement" - or "satisfactory" under Ofsted's old framework.

But inspectors now say that a "significant proportion of the teaching is outstanding", though some teachers still "require improvement".

Among their key findings were:

*Pupils make increasingly good progress.

*Pupils enjoy school, are enthusiastic about learning and feel very safe.

*Behaviour and attitudes to learning are good.

*School leaders are supported well by the academy federation, Harris, a not-for-profit charity that looks after 27 primary and secondary academies in London and the South East.

The report also found that the 25 per cent of pupils who speak English as an additional language as the school make "good progress in extending their understanding".

Inspectors also noted, however, that pupils do not study subjects other than English and Maths thoroughly enough.

Matt Britt, the school's executive principal - described by Ofsted as having “brought energy, resilience and a strong track record to the role”, said: "We are delighted that Ofsted has recognised these improvements and are now busy planning to further improve the Academy so that we become outstanding.

"I want to thank parents and the Chafford community for believing in us, and in particular my staff and pupils.

"They are motivated, hardworking and share a love of learning. I am proud to be responsible for such a wonderful Academy and look forward to sharing many more successes with you in future."
