Labour and Tories "weigh up grand coalition" to keep Ukip at bay

Jubilant - Thurrock Ukip members enjoy a successful night

LABOUR and the Conservatives are considering joining forces in a bid to quash the Ukip surge.

The Gazette has been told senior figures in both the local Labour and Tory groups have spoken about the possibility of working together in the future, with an insider talking about the possibility of a “grand coalition”.

The source said the parties had anticipated a Ukip surge and were discussing the prospect of "teaming up" ahead of last week’s vote, which left both Thurrock’s main parties with bloody noses.

Since the election, Labour and the Conservatives have ruled out a pact with Ukip and the Gazette understands further talks are imminent.

One source said: “I’d lay my money on a grand coalition between Labour and the Conservatives.

“Talks have already taken place and more are planned.”

The Gazette understands the Conservatives will NOT demand it occupies senior roles within the council’s cabinet as part of the agreement.

Instead, it is expected the party will ask Labour to instead vote for a Conservative mayor at the annual council meeting on Wednesday, June 11, with the "coalition" then working on a "supply and confidence" basis, meaning the Tories will vote with Labour – or abstain – on motions and reports.

Following the dramatic elections, Labour lost overall control of the council.

The reds now have 23 councillors, the Tories 18, Ukip six and there are two independents who both represent East Tilbury.

Speaking after last week's dramatic count, Labour leader John Kent, said: “It’s been a really tough election and, clearly, Ukip have given a bit of a kicking to both the main parties.

“We need a period of reflection and to move forward in as mature a way as possible to ensure the council can deliver the best for residents in a very difficult time.”

Tim Aker, one of the most senior figures in the Thurrock Ukip group, said: “I would not put it past them doing a deal to get us out.

Thurrock Gazette:

Concern - Labour leader John Kent looks on as Ukip oust two of his councillors

“We’re used to seeing such vitriol from the ‘legacy’ parties.

“You can’t put a cigarette paper between them.”

He added: “Whatever they do is their own concern.

“We will have a list of priorities for our residents.”

Thurrock Gazette:

Tories - in background - look on disappointingly as Ukip members - in the foreground, smile at more success.

Will they ensure that the Chair of Planning who lives in Norfolk is kicked out and replaced with someone who actually lives in Thurrock not 100 miles away?

Councillor John Kent gets £28,704.97 for being Leader of the Council, £8,201.42 for being a Councillor and £9,602.08 for being a Cabinet Member. He gets £46,500 plus expenses. I think he is laughing at all of us all the way to the bank.

Firstly a Lab-Con coalition is clearly not what either sides voters would expect or want. They have been at opposing ends of the spectrum on numerous issues. For councillors of those parties to even consider a coalition to maintain the status quo must be a slight to all who voted for them as well as all who voted for UKIP - for change. Do they expect voter loyalty next time? On this basis, all their voters might as well vote Lib Dem next time. In a hung council, all councillors should agree to vote independently of party, recognising what their constituents would want.

Well said, I would like to see the answers to these questions also. It goes to show you cannot trust either Labour or Conservatives now. Will the Conservatives actively stop the development of the Sandpits car park now? or the sale of Billet Fields to East Thurrock Football Club considering Mr. Kent is their Hon. Secretary and Mr. Speight's (Planning) father is an ex- secretary of the Football Club and is overseeing their relocation. Mr. Hebb was against this deal when I last emailed him? Or will he now go along with the scheisters we call the Labour Council. Also, will the conservatives now go along with the plan to merge with Barking and Dagenham that they were so opposed to - Jackie Doyle-Price was in this paper and on Facebook pleading for support to stop this happening? what now? They all disgust me - self serving users every one of them.

This news seems to prove two points.
Firstly that the grasping councillors will go to any lengths to stay on their gravy train, and two fingers to the voters
And secondly that the well used phrase 'liblabcon' is actually spot on - they ARE all the same and as voters in Thurrock we only have two choices, them or UKIP.

I see some comment on social media proposing Thurrock voters get the chance to reunite with Essex following Yarm voting to reunite with Yorkshire. Thurrock said to have a shared view with rest of Essex as exposed by the UKIP voting and limited connection with Londoners. Comment asking about what has Thurrock council achieved since it went stand alone from Essex. Looks like our Lab-Con councillors are looking to prove the point behind that.

The only people acting like Fascists during the recent elections were the unwashed lefties of Hope not Hate. They obviously didn't have any badger culls or fracking to protest against. Perhaps they should put all that energy into doing something positive like looking after their personal hygiene and finding gainful employment. Perhaps finding a nice boyfriend or girlfriend as well.
