10:49pm

ROCHFORD District Council is a Conservative stronghold, with 29 of the 39 seats held by Tories – with two others by Independent Conservatives.

A third of the seats are up for reelection, nine of them Conservative, so even if they were to lose all nine, they would still hold a majority of 20.

But with a series of controversial council decisions, such as increasing parking fees and plans for new homes, Conservative seats may not be as safe as they once were.

10:48pm

SOUTHEND could witness a historic transfer of power.

Few people expect the Tories to keep their wafer-thin majority on Southend Council after the election, but whether the group can maintain its 14-year grip on power is a tougher question.

The council will definitely have a new leader as West Leigh Conservative Nigel Holdcroft is standing down after seven years.

Deputy leader John Lamb will replace him as Tory leader, but he is likely to face a tough battle to form an administration as even Conservatives secretly admit they are likely to lose several seats in the east of the borough.

10:47pm

10:46pm

CASTLE POINT council leader Pam Challis will have a fight on her hands to keep her seat.

She has led the council for 11 years – successfully fending off more than one Tory challenge to her position, but now the threat she has is from outside.

Ukip’s Ron Hurrell will be confident he can cause an upset in her St Peter’s ward.

The Eurosceptic party didn’t stand in the seat in 2012, but it is within the Thundersley division won by Ukip’s Jamie Huntman last year, so a major shock could be on the cards.

The council’s balance of power could hinge on whether Ukip continues its surge in the borough.

Other wards in the party’s crosshairs include Tory-held St George’s which is within the Thundersley seat.

The party, who pundits predict will also benefit from the local elections being held on the same day as the European poll, also won the South Benfleet seat on the county council last year. The seat includes Appleton and St Mary’s wards where the Conservatives could be vulnerable.

10:44pm

The traditional Tory heartland of Billericay could also see an upset, as the fallout from the council’s housing plan continues.

The Tory administration had initially put the west and eastern side of the town in the firing line for more than 2,000 homes – but has since U-turned on that after fears over traffic and congestion were raised by County Hall.

However, the climbdown is unlikely to be made official before the summer when the local plan is ratified. The Tories faced a huge backlash in the town when it announced its housing plans – mostly on the green belt – with residents claiming Billericay can’t cope.

Resident groups were set up, while fuming locals demanded a referendum.

That could still come back to haunt the Tories with Ukip, the Lib Dems, and Labour all fielding candidates in the four Billericay wards.

10:40pm

It could be all change for Basildon Council because the Tory administration could fall after 12 years.

The Conservatives could lose their vice-like grip on power they have held for more than a decade if they lose just three out of the 11 seats they are defending.

10:39pm

While we are waiting for results, let's have a look at the picture so far...

I wonder what will happen when people realise that Farage is just a toff like Camoron and they are looking at more job cuts and austerity and probably pacts with the Tories. Good to get rid of the traitorous, LibDems , however.

I see the Sour Grapes merchants are out in force above as usual. Truth is they can't cope with the fact that the lefties have been given a clobbering by the people of Basildon who have had enough of leftwing fascist freaks. Unfortunately there were also some sad casualties too. And this has been the trend across the country.

Earlier yesterday the grubby egotist Callaghan was, so I am told, tweeting "#winning" and later was mouthing off at the mayor and myself in the street that everybody loved him and that they were going to retake the council.

#fatchance

Talk about self promotion and an over inflated sense of your own self importance..

At last, he has been well and truly slapped down for being so smug and presumptions. Despite all the posturing the Labour group supported by Socialist "Baroness" Ange of Vange (surely a contradiction in terms) and hapless and long suffering partner, have been doing over previous weeks, it was a desolate, barren night for them. A lesson that should be well learned but as they are such bad losers no doubt this will result in tantrums and foot stomping, judging by their usual performance.

UKIP now in official opposition. Labour - not a sausage. Not even a chipolata (pardon the pun Callaghan)

Gloating? You bet I am. Having been on the receiving end of his internet insults, lies and general character assassination for months. Like lots of others.

Commiserations to the Tories who lost their seats, congratulations to UKIP and Tories who retained/gained.

An exciting night. So glad to have been there to witness the sheer joy and excitement - and the smiles being wiped off smug, presumptious and complacent faces.

This is what you get for being fascist bigots who cannot stand anyone else having an opposing view - and labelling them with "isms". And also for bullying voters on the doorstep.

#ownmedicine

I'm using excessive hashtags so the cerebally challenged of the Basildon political scene can comprehend, especially those who use Twitter to ram their politics down people's throats instead of actually listening to people without being judgemental of them and personally insulting anyone who dares disagree with their suffocating and destructive politics.

I suggest in future Labour select candidates with a degree of maturity and humility, both characteristics sadly lacking in the current mob.
