LONDON Gateway has announced another major client for its sprawling logistics park - with the potential for a further 300 jobs coming to the area.

Prologis, an operator and developer of industrial real estate, is to work with DP World - owners of the sprawling London Gateway port and logistics park site - to develop a distribution centre the size of four footbal pitches.

The warehouse development will be built speculatively and offer a flexible distribution space on Europe's largest logistics park, which will neighbour the port.

Prologis will then lease the warehousing space out to other companies wishing to use the logistics park.

The number of jobs the development offers will depend on who eventually occupies the building, but it has the potential to bring a further 300 jobs to the park.

Last July, Marks and Spencer announced it was to be the first firm to set up a distribution centre at the park, bringing 800 jobs.

By the end of 2015, there could be more than 1000 people employed at the logistics park alone.

Andrew Griffiths, managing director at Prologis UK, said: "We are delighted to be developing this new unit with DP World at London Gateway Logistics Park.

"This is the best opportunity in the South East to offer multi-modal connectivity.  The park has the potential to offer big cost savings and efficiencies for global supply chains and we believe it is a game changer for the UK market."

The distribution centre Prologis and DP World are building will be an energy efficient single-sided, 15-metre-high unit with a 55 metre yard and space with potential for expansion.

Strong demand has led to the development being taken forward and groundworks are already underway. It is hoped the building could be ready by Spring 2015.

Simon Moore, Chief Executive at London Gateway, said: "I’m delighted to be able welcome a leading developer of industrial real estate to DP World London Gateway. I’m confident that this partnership will deliver a great development and I’m looking forward to seeing the building work start very soon."

Prologis owns or co-owns approximately 574 million square feet of industrial property in 21 countries.

It has 4,700 customers including manufacturers, retailers, transportation companies, third-party logistics providers and other enterprises.
