Traffic lights to be switched off at key West Thurrock roundabouts at night

TRAFFIC lights are to be switched off for five hours each night at two roundabouts in the west of the borough.

Lights at the Treacle Mine roundabout and the A1306 roundabout for Lakeside Kating and the shopping centre will be turned off between 12am and 5am everyday as part of a three-month pilot scheme.

The move is said to be for convenience of motorists at night. It is thought many jump the lights in the early hours after getting fed up of waiting at junctions when there is little other traffic on the road.

The night-time switch off will start later this month.

Cllr Andy Smith, portfolio holder for transportation, said: “People who use this road say they think it would be better if the lights were switched off, at least overnight. I fear that some using the road late at night actually jump the lights.

“The best way to find out what’s best for sure is to try it out and that’s exactly what we will be doing.

“We know how the roundabouts work with the lights already and we’ll be able to compare statistics and come to a fully informed conclusion once the pilot is completed.”

It's a start, but common sense would dictate a permanent switching off as they did at the Pilgrims Lane roundabout on the old A13, 8 or 9 years ago. But then common sense is never high on the agenda.

Terrific news. Both of these sets of lights are a complete waste of time but 12am is too late. I accept that late night shopping takes place at Lakeside which might make 10pm an issue but 11pm would be fine.

Still, signs of common sense finally taking hold in the Thurrock Highways corridors of power. Lets hope they look out their window and see what a mess they've made of the town centre roads and do something about them too.

I'm all for switching the lights off but the lakeside karting roundabout London bound doesn't look like a roundabout without the lights. I predict carnage....

Great idea I normally sit at the go kart lights in the morning with bugger all coming out of lakeside at 7 in the morning. The pilgrims lane roundabout is miles better with no lights.
