THE South Ockendon Centre and The Ockendon Academy came together last week for an afternoon of literacy-based games to promote reading in the local community.

Year seven students from the school on Erriff Drive - high achievers in the academy’s accelerated reading programme - were chosen to support year six students from Bonnygate Primary in Arisdale Avenue, in a range of interactive activities.

The older students from the Academy talked to the younger children about their favourite books and guided them through the quizzes and games.

Prizes were awarded for the highest marks in the book quiz and all the Bonnygate students left with stickers, bookmarks, and a range of information for parents to help them improve their reading.

The Ockendon Academy and the South Ockendon Centre’s library plan to host further literacy events in the future.
