AN £800million project that would see a huge TV and film studio complex built in Purfleet is a “genuine wow moment” that can’t be missed, according to one councillor.

The Gazette last week revealed plans for the development that would also see 2,300 homes built, along with a school, cinema, gym and a hotel.

Proposals also include the transformation of the waterfront on the Thames by including a marina and an oyster bar.

West Thurrock ward councillor Oliver Gerrish shared his excitement at the prospect of the development at a council planning and regeneration committee meeting.

He said: “This is a genuine ‘wow’ moment. To just look at the scope of vision for Purfleet is worlds away from what we could have hoped for.

“If you asked me ten years ago about this and the High House Production Park, it’s something we would’ve had to pinch ourselves over. Let’s not waste the opportunity and make sure we really grab this and make the most of it for Purfleet.”

At the meeting, the committee recommended a group of developers and builders – known as the Yellow Consortium – should be chosen by the council to take on the scheme.

About 1,500 jobs could be created by the 15-year project, which would be completed in six phases.
