SPEED cameras could be put up and the speed limit reduced to 50mph on the A13.

The Highways Agency, who are responsible for the dual carriageway in Thurrock between Wennington and Tilbury, are exploring a number of options to improve the safety of the road - one being speed cameras and cutting the speed limit from 70mph to 50mph.

The move comes as the roads authority prepares to spend £150million improving junction 30 of the M25, where the road meets the A13 in the west of Thurrock.

The A13 could be widened to four lanes between junction 30 of the M25 and the A13 junction for Lakeside shopping centre.

The plan would see the slip roads, both on and off of the M25 and A13, widened, allowing traffic to flow from one road to the other without the need to stop.

Work is scheduled to start in early 2015 and could be completed by Autumn 2016.

It is hoped work will improve traffic flow at the busy junction and, with the introduction of free-flow tolling at the Dartford Crossing in October, ease congestion which often builds up on approach to the QEII Bridge.

A spokesman for the Highways Agency said: “Safety is a top priority for the Highways Agency and that is why we constantly monitor safety on our network, including on the A13 in Essex.

“We are looking at making safety improvements to the A13 as part of the package of major improvements to relieve congestion on the M25 at junction 30 and we plan to provide further information about our plans this summer.”

A spokesman for Thurrock Council said the authority was aware of talks about implementing speed limits both during and after the J30 works, but added nothing formal had been agreed.
