PLANS to build up to 154 new homes in Grays were given the go ahead last night.

Developers Barratt Homes plan to build a mixture of two, three and four bed houses and two bed flats on the site of the former William Ball office, on land between London Road and Gumley Road.

As well as the housing, the development will also see a new public space open and play area integrated into the plans.

As part of the development, The Chase, to the west of the proposed site, will be upgraded.

Outline planning was granted in March 2012.

Concerns were raised by Councillor Tunde Ojetola that the extra people the development would bring to the area would put further strain on school places.

These were dismissed however by officers, who said the planned new free school in Chafford Hundred would be adequate to meet any demand.

I wouldn't buy a tent in South Stifford, West Thurrock, or Purfleet. If a car parking space goes free, they build a block of flats on it. It must have some of the ugliest developments in thurrock. Or should I say the London Borough of Thurrock. It's already overcrowded and yet they still cram them in. Thurrock is fast becoming an over developed sh1thole with only one option left open to it. Bye bye green belt land.

Prospective buyers should be made aware that London road becomes a car park if there's a slight breeze across the QE2 bridge. Infrastructure anyone?

This development is mainly houses so it should be welcomed, especially when you compare the plans with that God awful Aspire development next to it. I guess Ojetola wants to lift the drawbridge now he is in the castle.

Well built and well designed houses on this site is not a bad idea but a doctors surgery, a nursery school or some other facility should be included. All houses should be made to have 2 parking spaces and a park big enough to create a sense of space. London Road should also be tarted up as no one is going to buy a house there and stay very long if the overall area looks like a dump.

if these are decent houses it should be welcomed, but the roads and traffic need to be sorted out,the relief road though the old wouldham works should be a priority.

Yes, all it needs is about 100 yards to link it up!
