A PARCEL delivery man has been cautioned by police after he attacked a Basildon shopper in front of a six-year-old girl.

Ryan Calder, 30, was punched in the face by the Parcelforce worker several times on Monday morning.

Mr Calder was walking into B&Q, at Pipps Hill retail park, Basildon, with his daughter, six, when the driver bumped into him and another man with his parcel.

Mr Calder, of Mackley Drive, Corringham, asked the driver twice if he was going to apologise.

When he got no reply he turned to his daughter and called the delivery man an “idiot”.

The man dropped his parcel before launching himself at Mr Calder.

B&Q staff had to drag the Parcelforce worker away, before calling the police at about 9.30am.

He was later given a caution for assault causing actual bodily harm, which Mr Calder's wife said was not enough.

Essex Police usually hand out cautions for first-time offenders and when there is very little injury suffered.

Laura Calder, 31, said: “I’m just so annoyed this has happened.

“My husband was an innocent bystander and he was attacked.

“There’s no justice.”

Mr Calder was left with a sore head following the attack, but suffered no further injuries.

However, Mrs Calder said her daughter had been left shocked and shaken and was suffering nightmares after witnessing the incident.

Mrs Calder has demanded Parcelforce tells her what has happened to her husband’s attacker.

So far it has not replied.

She said: “Parcelforce is a worldwide company. You would think it would care and at least phone us to see howwe are.

“I want to know how it is going to deal with this man. I’m not being fobbed off.”

Essex Police confirmed they had cautioned a 39-year-old Wickford man for assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He will face no further action.

A Spokesperson for Parcelforce said: “Parcelforce Worldwide can confirm an employee has been suspended following a reported incident yesterday, whilst an internal investigation is carried out. We also understand the police are not taking any further action.”

A caution just because it was the first time?

The streets will be overrun soon with people spoiling for a fight.

Pathetic truly pathetic. This yob should have been reported to his employer and duly sacked. And charged with ABH.

There are hundreds of people queuing or his job already.

After being bumped into, a normal person would most probably just mutter under their breath and go about their business. If Mr Calder was to actually be that offended he had to say something, I am sure it would've been words stronger than "Idiot". What makes it worse is he had his 6 year old daughter with him, great example to show her.

Uncanny how every time there seems to be an echo reader at an incident or they 'know the person involved'. Additionally it is very coincidental that the comment was written by the aptly named "w1tness' and amusing how the other echo readers believe in their post and follow suit.

probably thats why he just got a caution as it sounds like the postie was heavily provoked, just sounds odd if it happened like the echo said it did to which i strongly doubt.

" Mr Calder, of Mackley Drive, Corringham, asked the driver twice if he was going to apologise. When he got no reply he turned to his daughter and called the delivery man an “idiot”. "

Exactly this 'victim' instigated the incident, acted the big man in front of his daughter an then running the police when the parcel man stood up to him. Sadly the guy may well lose his job.

One positive to come out of this is that all of Ryan & Laura Calders friends, family and acquaintances as well as 1/2 of south Essex can see them for the family of both cowards and grasses that they are.

Well done to the police for issuing a caution, its a shame ryan is not arrested for a pubic order offence, in light of the eye witness accounts perhaps there is still time.

I also not tough guy Ryan was with another man when he starter this confrontation & its common courtesy to get out of the way when someone is carrying a package.

Uncanny how every time there seems to be an echo reader at an incident or they 'know the person involved'. Additionally it is very coincidental that the comment was written by the aptly named "w1tness' and amusing how the other echo readers believe in their post and follow suit.
Had to laugh at that too, according to the 'Thumbs Up's' on that post nearly 60 people witnessed the incident and can verify the posters story :)

Everything is loaded in favour of criminals these days. Has been for years.

Oh dear, this is a first - the other side of an Echo 'report'

This place is chock full of 'angels' getting turfed off buses and all manner of other types being put upon. For no reason whatsoever.

I expect you tell me your Dad could fight mine next. (If you knew him of course) Ha ha

I'm more than happy to read your pathetic retorts in your sad attempt to better me on these boards but that will never happen.

For as everyone knows, you are by far, the most unpopular 'contributor' to post on this site.

Disliked, disagreed with and ridiculed by all.

Oh, and as usual, have you made one single valid point apropos the subject matter?

The thumbs down for telling it like it is just proves my point LOL...many of the posters on this section could fit very comfortably on any right-wing forum...and probably do..do you?

oh you shallow oaf..do you think the sort of cack-minded people voting me down makes an iota of difference to me?

It actually strengthens my resolve...I often find myself on here confronting bigotry, discrimination and racial comments by denizens from right-wing cesspit forums, so what more could I expect.

Oh now you are playing a game...isn't it always the case when those who find themselves challenged, first they go off half-cocked swearing and cursing (you got banned for that remember) and then they try to out argue with lots of ad hominem attacks (playing to the right-wing galley)

But then cant help letting themselves down with their usual referral to their pet hate..and when challenged again on that pretend it was all to get a reaction from those who challenge them..YAWN...yeah right...

As for keeping on topic...you haven't, not only on here but every thread you are challenged on in regards to your racial angle to things...you bleat about what you are guilty off...sad specimen.

As for the topic..In a case like this, I'd not comment on something i did not witness.

I haven't read every comment on this page, but I'm shocked at the amount of people who think it's ok for someone to punch someone in the face because of a sarcastic or rude comment, particularly in front of his own daughter. I don't think there is any excuse for this sort of behaviour, and there's too much violence in the world. It's not acceptable to say someone needs a slap, it just encourages perpetual violence. By the way, I don't know anyone involved in this, I'm just shocked how many people think it's acceptable to punch someone in the face because of a comment or some abuse they didn't like.

The poor girl must have been totally petrified - the parcel guy acted like a complete thug. I'll say it again, there's no excuse for violence, certainly not here!
So it's ok for the guy to mouth off with his daughter with him. What a wonderful role model he is.

As far as the girl being petrified, her mouthy, antisocial father put her directly in that situation, so he is solely to blame for her upset. Maybe he will learn to not act like such a verbally aggressive child in the future, especially when he has children with him.

Remember that kids immitate their parents, so if he acts like this often, I can only imagine what she will grow up like.....

As far as I can see, all the girl has learnt is that when someone barges into you, you're safer to say nothing than to ask for an apology. If I'd barged into someone like that, I would have immediately offered an apology, not punched the guy for calling me an idiot. That would have been the end of the story. The father was obviously teaching his daughter that it's wrong to not apologise when things like this happen.

The father was teaching his daughter a lesson, by calling a stranger an 'idiot'? Was he trying to teach her that when someone is walking away, you must insult them? Great lesson if you want to be beaten up or knifed. See, get mouthy to strangers and you don't know what they are capable of.

Say what you want about the actions of the delivery guy, he did not have a child with him. For Mr Calder to act the way he did and give no concern to his daughter, is gross. To directly bring her into it is disgusting.

Simple lesson, dont act like a yob in public.

Well you would have read this post from W1tness,

"What a load of B*llocks, I was there when it happened. The postie said sorry straight away about four or five times but Mr Calder just kept abusing & threatening the postie. Far enough the postie should not of hit him. but with what was coming out of Mr Calder mouth anyone would of hit him.. Mr Calder deserved what he got"

Nobody is saying it is OK to use violence, but Mr Calder and Mr Calder alone put himself in that position. Had he have just walked away none of this would've happened.
