UPDATED: A man was air lifted to hosital following a serious road accident in Grays

AN INVESTIGATION has been launched into the cause of a serious crash in Grays which has left a man seriously ill in hospital.

The crash happened when a motorcyclist lost control while travelling along the A126 Eastern Way shortly after 1pm and struck a lamp post near its junction with Bankfoot.

The rider, 43, was airlifted to Royal London Hospital after sustaining head and chest injuries. He condition has been reduced to stable after his injuries were initially thought to be life-threatening.

The road was closed until 5.30pm whilse police investigated the scene.

The air ambulance left around 2.20pm with the man on board. He was treated at the scene for almost an hour.

The air ambulance took the man to Royal London Hospital around 2.20pm.

Eyewitnesses crowded the scene when the air ambulance arrived.

One woman said: “I only live round the corner and didn’t know anything was going on until I heard the helicopter landing. I reckon they were here for about an hour. I really hope the person involved will be ok.”

A man at the scene added: “The paramedics were treating the person for a very long time before he went off in the air ambulance. I didn’t see what happened, but came out when I heard the helicopter. It looked very serious.”

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance said: "We were called to the aid of a man, believed to be in his 40s, who had suffered life-threatening head and chest injuries.

“He was treated on scene and was sedated before being airlifted to the Royal London Hospital, where upon arrival he was believed to be in a critical condition."
