Car owners who block waste collections to be named and shamed

Thurrock Gazette: Bin bags are are left uncollected because refuse vehicles are being blocked by illegally parked cars. Bin bags are are left uncollected because refuse vehicles are being blocked by illegally parked cars.

OWNERS of illegally parked cars that block access to refuse vehicles causing waste and recycling collections to be missed are to be named and shamed.

Thurrock Council has announced that from tomorrow cars that prevent collections will have a letter placed on them explaining the problem they are causing. Neighbours will also receive a letter with the cars registration number on explaining why a collection couldn’t be made.

Cllr Victoria Holloway, in charge of environment, said: “In some roads collections are missed on a weekly basis because of people parking their cars in such a way that block access to the bins or the road itself.

“The time has come to do something about it.”

She added: “Parked cars have prevented refuse vehicles gaining access in the same areas over and over again.

“If access is blocked, we come back later the same day to try again, but problems with parked cars on a number of streets have prevented a collection on a number of occasions.

Cllr Holloway said it’s the same cars each week that cause the problem preventing collectors from being able to do their job.

She warned: “Ultimately we can remove a car that is causing an obstruction on the highway - and make no mistake that’s exactly what we will do if we have to, we are warning residents that this it is going to happen and we mean it.”

Make parking legal everywhere... Then it wouldn't be illegal... Just another excuse to harass hard pressed drivers... The council should do their job properly and take away peoples trash. Binmen have become lazy and work shy... TAKE AWAY THE RUBBISH. It's what we pay you for... Take it away and thank us for paying you!!!!

I cannot believe how bad parking is getting. Idiot drivers who think it is acceptable to park over driveways, park with 4 wheels on and blocking the pavement and those literally blocking the road, are all getting more common.

The council should provide a number to a fast acting parking warden service, who come out and fine all of the selfish parkers.

This doesnt explain why, when the recycle truck and food waste truck can make it on the designated days, the general waste truck is nowhere to be seen.

How on earth are they going to manage this when they can't even manage to put the bins back properly and instead leave them alll over the paths/in the roads causing dangerous hazards?!

Just another "let's blame everyone but ourselves" excuse from Thurrock Council of the bad management of rubbish collection I think.

Interesting choice of picture as on no account will the binmen pick up refuse from sacks outside of the wheelie bins.

I agree with Mattster, the photo shows what appears to be a legally parked car next to some fly-tipped waste. Great Journalism!

Perhaps they would like to try to be a little more considerate themselves. Using Argent Street at 6:30 am as a short-cut for starters, very noisy as they go over the speed humps, waking residents. There's a 7.5T limit so they shouldn't be there unless its collection day. They also probably shouldn't be using London Rd. bus lane at the width restriction except on collection day, but they do that as well.

Pot, kettle & black come to mind here! I live in Argent Street in Grays, it has a 7.5T weight limit except for access. However the bin lorries (& other council vehicles) totally ignore this. Most mornings we hear crash, bang wallop at around 6:30am as they bounce over the speed humps, a rat-run to London Rd. They are also regularly seen going through the bus lane on London Rd. to get round the width restriction.
