THE Mayor of Thurrock drew out the winning numbers for a raffle that raised over £500 for a cancer charity.

The raffle was organised by Peter Land, 56, South Ockendon, and was drawn at the Mayor’s Parlour at the Civic Offices in Grays.

In total raised £505 for MacMillan Cancer Care.

Mr Land chose the charity in memory of his dad, and said it was for the good work and effort they put into fundraising themselves.

Peter said: “My dad died of cancer a few years ago and then I heard about the work MacMillan do and how they use coffee mornings to raise money. I just felt I had to do something.”

Prizes included a signed photograph of footballer Sir Geoff Hurst from Heroes Framing Centre in Grays and a stay at the Waldorf Hilton Hotel in London.

Mayor Cllr Tony Fish said: “Peter’s obviously put a great deal of work into doing this and deserves our thanks. When he asked me to make the draw, it was a pleasure to accept.”

Prizes can be collected from the Thurrock Gazette office on Orsett Road from Monday, January 27.
