GRAYS Athletic's number one goalkeeper has been suspended for a year.

Lamar Johnson was handed the ban on Friday following an investigation by the Football Association into an incident which happed in the tunnel after Blues had beaten Bury Town 4-3 on Wednesday, September 25.

The Gazette understands that Johnson overturned tables and smashed glass after a Bury player said something to him at full time.

Players and staff attempted to restrain a furious Johnson but the police were eventually called to diffuse the situation.

On Twitter, Johnson said: "Cantona got 8 months for attacking a fan, Di Canio got 11 games for putting a ref on his ass, Suarez got 8 games for biting and I get a year."

He told another tweeter that he is "finished".

In a statement on the club's website, a Grays Athletic spokesman said: "Lamar Johnson has been suspended by the FA following their investigation into an incident following the home match with Bury Town.

"Lamar has been fined and suspended for twelve months for his part in the incident, a charge to which he pleaded guilty. No further comment can be made by the club, until appeal opportunities have been exhausted."

The suspension comes as a real blow to Ryan Kirby as his side enter crunch-time in their bid to stay in the Ryman Premier League.

Johnson returned from a separate suspension on Saturday to put in a second-half man of the match display against Maidstone United but will now miss the remainder of this season and half of the next.

The club are now in desperate need of a goalkeeper after Luke Chambers returned to Southend United following a brief loan spell.

Calls are being made for George Kamurasi, who filled in capably for Johnson during Blues' sensational promotion push last term, to make a return to the club after he was released at the beginning of the season.
