A SHIPPING firm has announced plans to increase the number of services it operates out of the Port of Tilbury - just two months after it began using the port’s container terminal.
Hamburg-based firm Oldenburg-Portugiesische Dampfschiffs-Rhederei and the London Container Terminal struck an agreement in November last year for the shipping firm to make 200 calls a year at Tilbury, with ships heading to the Canary Islands, Spain and North Africa.
Starting next week, two more Canary Island services per week will call at Tilbury.
“We are enjoying working with OPDR and this expansion of their services is testament to London Container Terminal’s perfect shipping location for OPDR’s short-sea services,” said Perry Glading, Chief Operating Officer of Forth Ports, who own the Port of Tilbury.
Till Ole Barrelet OPDR’s chief executive said: “We are looking forward to consolidating all our services to London Container Terminal and to developing our cooperation further.”
The first OPDR vessel called at Tilbury in December. The MV OPDR Cadiz, capable of carrying 700 containers, arrived at the London Container Terminal from Bilbao in Spain, with a delivery of potatoes.
