First steps to widen the A13
THE widening of a stretch of the A13 to three lanes has been put out to tender.
The A13 between the A128 Orsett Cock and A1014 The Manorway is currently two lanes but, due to increased use of the road because of the London Gateway development, it is expected the carriageway will be full by 2016.
This could damage growth in the area and harm current businesses, as well as negatively impacting the on the £1.5billion superport.
At the last council cabinet meeting, Andy Smith, who is responsible for regeneration, highways and transportation, said the authority needed to ensure the £90million works were carried out as soon as possible.
He said: "We want to get it done. It will be over-capacity in three years, so we must get a move on. We are working on securing funding through the South East Local Enterprise Partnership so the scheme can be delivered between 2015 and 2019."
