Pedestrian hit by Lakeside "boy racer"

Thurrock Gazette: As cruisers gathered at Lakeside on Saturday night, it is believed some enthusiasts began racing As cruisers gathered at Lakeside on Saturday night, it is believed some enthusiasts began racing

A WOMAN was hit by a car believed to be racing on roads around Lakeside shopping centre.

A witness told how she was crossing outside TGI Friday’s in West Thurrock Way when she was sent flying by a “speeding” Volkswagen Golf.

She landed on the car’s bonnet, smashing its windscreen, and suffered injuries to her arm.

The incident happened at about 10.30pm on Saturday as cruisers once again descended on the retail park.

One witness, a 22-year-old man, who did not wish to be named, saw the accident happen from the otherside of the road.

He said: “There was someone driving too fast.

“He hit the woman and sent her flying. She landed on the windscreen. I went running over to her and she couldn’t move, she was in a lot of pain.

“It looked like the car was racing. It was doing 40 or 50 mile per hour and had ten to 15 cars behind it.”

Police, who were dealing with the first significant cruiser meeting at Lakeside in months, are investigating.

A spokesperson said: “Police were in the area having been called to reports of a meeting of car enthusiasts. Any witnesses are asked to contact police on 101.”

These dangerous, one brain celled idiots need to start doing prison time if caught racing.

I wonder if the 'we're doing no wrong' morons will play down this escapade.

Now will the police do something - there have been 17 arrests but it doesn't look like it made the slightest bit of difference.
Take their cars away from them, even if the belong to "mummy or daddy".
Thank goodness this poor woman wasn't killed.

I'll admit that I used to go to these meets as a modified car enthusiast - NOT a racer - and I hated it when it got out of hand and the racing started and would leave as soon as I could (even putting myself and my car at risk trying to get out of the area). It's horribly dangerous!

I agree with the comments above, if they are caught speeding or racing, remove the vehicles from them and crush them. No excuses, no second chances.

I sincerely hope this poor woman is fully recovered soon!

I'm always amazed that we, as residents, in the area can often hear these races going on yet they pass unchecked by police. WHY?????

I'm not being funny but I drive normally and people have jst stepped out onto the road without even looking. I'm not blaming the lady but if the car was really going that fast then she'd have been a lot worse off.

Because it's the Essex Police who are as useful as a chocolate fireguard.
