MORE and more young families are leaving London for Thurrock as house prices rise, it has been claimed.

Research by Hamptons International estate agents found that in 2012, 3,760 people, with an average age of 32, left the capital for Thurrock, placing the borough among the top 10 destinations of choice for young famililes migrating from the city.

The research linked the influx with rising house prices in London - which could soar by 32 per cent in the next five years.

It found, too, that many families want to remain close to the city, with the average move being just 26 miles. It is approximately 22 miles from Grays to Charing Cross.

David Copes, owner of Copes Estate Agents in Grays, said the trend is nothing new and reckons 50 per cent of his house buyers come from London. “There’s always been migration from London to Thurrock. It is often first time buyers coming.

“I would think a good 50 per cent of people who call us are coming from London, places like Ilford and Romford in particular. It’s mainly because it’s cheaper here, people can’t afford to stay living in London and Thurrock is only half an hour by train.”

Johnny Morris, Head of Research at Hamptons International, said: “Many of those leaving London are in their 30s and 40s, in search of more space and a different lifestyle. These London Leavers aren’t cutting ties with the capital though commuting for work and staying close enough to access to the capital’s amenities and nightlife.”
