STUDENTS at a Thurrock college have been benefiting from improved links with local employers.

South Essex College has joined forced with employment agency Reed, who are helping students get the inside track on jobs and apprenticeships in the area.

Reed has teamed up with national awarding organisation, NCFE, to set-up an Employment Brokerage Team, accessible to students across its three main sites in Thurrock, Basildon, Southend to help them secure local positions.

Level 2 and 3 students, who have good attendance and are hitting deadlines, will have access to unique vacancies and will receive specific training in CV preparation, application and interview skills.

Angela O’Donoghue, Principal and Chief Executive of the College, said: “We all know how difficult the job market is at the moment. We are constantly hearing news about the number of young people who can’t find work or aren’t given opportunities.

“Our vocational courses help to prepare students for working in their chosen industry but now we are giving them a further boost by helping them find jobs in their chosen areas. We want our students to not just be a success at College but also when they leave us as well. By giving students this head start we can help make a difference for them with the help and expertise of Reed NCFE.”

South Essex College, currently based in Woodview, Grays will be moving to a brand new campus from the start of the next school year, in New Road, Grays, with the students in the heart of Grays Town Centre.

Mrs O’Donoghue said: “We’ll also be supporting South Essex College students throughout their College life, finding them work experience to complement their studies, and helping them to find part time jobs. We are really looking forward to working with students across Basildon, Southend and Thurrock - helping them through their studies and giving them that extra lift to where they want to be career wise."
