First ever train leaves superport
1:40pm Friday 11th October 2013 in News
HISTORY has been made at the London Gateway superport after the first ever freight train departed from it – just a month before it opens for business.
DB Schenker Rail UK became the first rail company to operate out of the £1.5billion port, laden with containers bound for its Trafford Park terminal.
The trainline was not scheduled to be used yet but, following the emergency docking of a fire-damaged cargo ship two weeks ago, 1,000 loads of cargo needed to be transported.
An estimated 30 per cent of cargo coming through the superport will be moved by rail.
