A NUMBER of teachers at secondary schools in Thurrock are set to strike on Tuesday over changes to pay, pensions and working hours.

The National Union of Teachers and National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers, which represent nine out of 10 teachers across the UK, claim changes being proposed by the Government would see the pay system dismantled, longer school days and years introduced and adverse changes made to pensions.

The one-day strike by teachers in Thurrock is set to affect each school differently. Gable Hall, Harris Academy Chafford Hundred and Ormiston Park Academy will be open as usual.

Hathaway Academy is open to pupils in years nine, 10 and 11 but closed to those in years seven and eight.

St Clere's School has sent letters out to all parents whose children they can accommodate tomorrow. On its website, it advises any parents who did not receive a letter through the post by Saturday, September 28 should not send their children to school.

Gateway Academy in Tilbury is open to students in year 11 and at the primary school only. William Edwards in Grays is also open to students in year 11 only and between the hours of 9.15am and 2.45pm.

Grays Convent will be closing at the earlier time of 2.05pm but is open as normal otherwise.

Hassenbrook Academy in Stanford-Le-Hope will be open to pupils in years 10, 11 and those in the sixth form, plus for any pupils whose parents are unable to arrange childcare.

Currently, the Ockendon Academy plans to open as usual but parents are advised to check the Academy's website on Tuesday morning.
