Karis' parents get a TV Surprise! Surprise!

A CORRINGHAM couple got a Surprise, Surprise when work for their charity foundation made national TV.
There wasn’t a dry eye in the house when John and Kerri Darling appeared on Surprise! Surprise! on Sunday, and told host Holly Willoughby all about their fundraising for the Karis May Darling Foundation – set up in memory of their daughter.
This was after pop sensations JLS had appeared at an event at Gable Hall School months ago to surprise the Karis Angels choir.
Karis, pictured, died suddenly after she contracted a streptococcus A infection, which can lead to meningitis, in April 2011. She was just 12.
Since then the family have spent much of their time raising money for charity, including building a new community centre on Corringham Park, to be opened in December.
To date, John and Kerri have raised £130,000 for the foundation and to say thank you for all John’s work in building the centre Kerri nominated him and the Karis Angels for the show.
John said when a film crew turned up they told him they were filming for a show on community projects in the area and couldn’t believe it when JLS joined the Karis Angels on stage.
He said: “It was unbelievable. We were enjoying the show when JLS walked on stage and joined in.
"They were all really nice blokes and I can’t tell you how much them coming to help us means to everyone.
“We recorded the show in July and it was quite unnerving speaking to Holly Willoughby in front of 500 people, but it went well and the response has been incredible.
“We have had thousands of people get in touch.”
Over five million people watched the show last weekend.
The final surprise showed how the programme had made a donation in the form of building play equipment near to the centre.
