Biggest ever cargo ship docks at London Gateway
1:00pm Friday 20th September 2013 in News
DOCKED alongside berth one at London Gateway, this is the biggest cargo ship to ever sail the River Thames.
Fire broke out on the 10,000 container vessel, spreading to 20 containers, while it was passing through the Suez Canal on Friday, August 23.
It was scheduled to call at the Port of Felixstowe, but that move was aborted owing to the need for emergency maintenance.
The Zim docked at London Gateway - which opens in November - shortly before 7pm on Friday and at very short notice. The ship will remain there for a week to have its cargo unloaded and repairs carried out.
A spokesman for London Gateway said: “We welcome the vessel to London Gateway to allow it to undertake essential work so it can continue quickly on its way. We were happy to help Zim in its hour of need and this gives us a good chance to test our systems.”
