'Parking stats are poorly spun'
7:00am Saturday 21st September 2013 in News
THE deputy leader of the Tories has criticised Thurrock Council’s parking service.
Rob Gledhill has condemned the service after figures from the 2013 Parking Report showed that, although the council picked up £191,959 from parking fines in 2012/13, they spent £211,586 issuing the fines in the first place.
Cllr Gledhill said: “Yet again I am dismayed to see Thurrock Labour leadership issue a report pretending to be good news.
“A quick look at the money involved and the reality soon becomes apparent.
“It is now costing £20,000 more a year to issue parking fines than the council collects, probably one of the very few councils making a loss on parking fines.
“So to break even they are reliant on making a big profit from resident permits, parking meters and car park charges.”
Cllr Gledhill said the level of lost income was not reflected in the public report. He added: “They need to stop trying to cover up their errors with silence or spin.”
