Changes at organisation threaten Thurrock funding
7:20am Friday 13th September 2013 in News
THE leader of Thurrock Council has vowed that the authority will continue to fight for funding from the South East Local Enterprise Partnership, despite potential changes which could see the body broken into smaller groups.
The concern is that if this were to happen, Thurrock would fall into a Greater Essex category and miss out on key funding for items such as road improvements.
Speaking at last week’s cabinet meeting, John Kent said: “Putting Thurrock on the top table and making sure we punch above our weight is critical to our success. We have been working very hard to ensure we retain our place.
“This is despite attempts by some to subsume Thurrock.
“This would mean decisions on Thurrock’s priorities being taken by a Greater Essex board in Chelmsford.
"We’ve been there before and we know what happens next. Thurrock loses out.”
He added: “We have made our position clear. Decisions that affect Thurrock must be made at as local a level as possible.”
