College buys country club for expansion bid

A PERFORMING arts college in Corringham is expanding after buying a village country club – and plans are in the offing to build new student accomodation.
Performers College, in Southend Road, has successfully negotiated the purchase of the Village Country Club – which is adjacent to the college – and currently includes a large gymnasium and dance studio.
The college leased the country club last year as it looked to expand but has now bought it, and plans to make it a hub of performing excellence over the coming years.
Principal Tracey Lee said the school wants to renovate the country club and build changing rooms, a coffee bar, offices, function rooms and an 80-space car park.
The college now also has enough land to build student accomodation in its grounds, something the principal says is being explored.
Mrs Lee said: “This is very exciting time to be a student at Performers College.
“The country club proved to be a big hit with our students last year and I know it will only be more so now we have such big plans for it.
“We certainly have enough space to build accommodation for 50 to 70 students. Many of our international students stay with landladies or in student housing but to have a base on site would be a big draw.
“The country club has such huge potential and we can use it as a small theatre as well as extra storage space.
Mrs Lee said students benefitted hugely from the gym, as body strength and fitness is crucial to aspects of performance.
The deal to buy the country club means the site is now one of the largest performing arts colleges in the UK.
It is not yet known how much the project will cost or when it will begin.
