THURROCK Council has united in attempts to have a water ring main added in South Ockendon after fires hit the area.

Cllr Wendy Curtis submitted a motion to the council asking for support in asking Essex and Suffolk Water to provide the main for the Buckles Lane area of South Ockendon.

She said it would ensure the appropriate water pressure is available to fire crews in the event of another fire.

Two mobile homes caught fire in April and a water bowser from Chelmsford had to be drafted in after a shortage of water.

In 2011 a fire broke out near a 1,000 litre propane gas tank, with water supplies also an issue.

Cllr Curtis said: “The residents need to know they are safe.

“We should not stand by until someone loses a life knowing we could have helped.

“There are not lakes in the vicinity that can be used and as such this is necessary. Parents should know if another fire broke out, this would be in place to help.”
