THE mayor and mayoress of Thurrock, Tony Fish and Sue Bradish, joined the mayor of Southwark, Cllr Abdul Mohamed, and Rose McDonald as a day of celebration took place to mark the 65th anniversary of SS Empire Windrush docking at Tilbury.
The ship landed on June 22, 1948, and led to the arrival of the first immigrants in the UK from the Caribbean.
On Sunday, there was a fun day at the London Cruise Terminal which included tours of Windrush exhibitions, music and educational workshops, a gospel choir and dance performances.
Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Thurrock Polly Billington, who attended the celebrations, said: “Tracing the steps of the travellers on the Windrush here in Tilbury was a moving experience.
“Without doubt Britain is a better place for their contribution to this country.”
