Pilot estate on Flowers Estate in South Ockendon seen 300 residents so far

A SCHEME to rid council houses of damp and mould is making progress.

Thurrock Council has been running a pilot scheme on the Flowers Estate in South Ockendon since last August.

Since then, more than 300 visits have been made, 218 ventilation units have been serviced and 25 new units have been installed.

Gaye Atkins, who lives in Rosemary Close, had huge problems with damp and mould since they moved into the property six years ago.

She said: "There was damp and mould all over the bathroom and bedrooms and it was just getting worse.

“The council carried out an inspection of our home and installed a heat recovery unit in the living room.

"I don't get windows covered in steam every time I cook which I use to have, all the mould has completely gone and I feel like I have my home back again. I am so pleased with the difference it has made and anyone who is having these problems should contact the council."

Val Morris-Cook, councillor responsible for housing, said: "Our contractors are finding that where ventilation units have been serviced or installed, the signs of damp and mould have significantly reduced which is very reassuring.

"We want to make sure that we inspect all homes in this pilot scheme. There are still quite a number of properties that we have not been able to gain access to.

Any tenants who have not been contacted can arrange an appointment by calling 01375 413805 or email SouthOckendonHousingTeam@thurrock.gov.uk.

So what happens to residents outside of this scheme with the same problems? I've had ongoing mould issues for seven years and the Council will not help at all

Really can't see why tax payers have to pay for this, mould can and should be tackled as soon as it is spotted. It doesn't become as bad as the article says overnight - typical tenants that can't be bothered to do something for themselves.

luckygirl, it isn't a case of lazy tennants, it's long term structural problems and a poor standard of repair and maintenance of social housing .

Black mould should NEVER be tackled without proper equipment. Mould is a proven cause of respiratory illnesses in the old, young and sick , and it is very dangerous in cases of long term exposure.

Your comments are both callous and misinformed

My comments are not callous or misinformed, even in these circumstances mould does not appear that bad overnight and can be kept under control. My point is that tax payers should not be paying for this when it can be controlled until repairs are able to be carried out. I would rather see my taxes go on front line services not on people who can't be bothered to help themselves.

It's all well and good the council saying they have visited 300 houses in Ockendon but how many have they not visited. These heat recovery are dotted around all over Thurrock and I bet not one has been serviced.

As for the tax payer footing the bill I suppose Labour have to say they are spend the tax hike on something rather than sticking it in the council bank account.
