Help save wildlife at family event

NATURE lovers are invited to a weekend of outdoor activity at a Thurrock beauty spot.

Essex Wildlife Trust is calling on families to help save wildlife this winter by attending the Winter Wildlife Weekend at Thameside Nature Park on Saturday, March 16, and Sunday, March 17.

The last event, in January, proved very popular.

Staff and volunteers organised a weekend of activities building nest boxes, bird feeders and hedgehog boxes as part of their Living Landscapes scheme, to encourage the community to share the vision of restoring, recreating and reconnecting wildlife habitats.

Rebekah Beresford, education and community officer for Essex Wildlife Trust, said: “The weekend was all about engaging the community with the wonders of our native wildlife and how to encourage them into our gardens. Achieve that and you will save wildlife this winter.”

The weekend was supported by a number of businesses, including the Four Vinteers, in Warley, the Majestic Warehouse, in Chelmsford, and Wooden Wine and Port Boxes, in Thurrock, who all donated wooden wine crates to transform into hedgehog hibernation boxes.

Staff also thanked Your DIY Centre, in Corringham, for donating 16,000 screws and Van Extras, in Herongate, for supplying wood to build the nest boxes.

The next wildlife weekend will be held at the Cory Environmental Trust Visitor Centre, in Thameside Nature Park, between 10am and 3pm on both days.

All ages are welcome and a suggested donation is requested per person. For more information, or to book, call 01375 643342.
