THOUSANDS of pounds is to be given to a community project.

SSE Renewables, the company building four wind turbines at Tilbury Docks, is handing £4,000 to the Tilbury Riverside Project.

Since the project launched in 1992, it has taken a lead role in organising events for the town, including the Christmas Lights event as well as promoting regeneration around the area.

The wind farm will generate around 50 per cent of the electricity at the Port of Tilbury. Turbines are due to arrive this month and the project will be finished by the end of April.

Martin Sweeney, SSE Renewables project manager, said: “We’re delighted to contribute to the Tilbury Riverside Project, a charity with such a strong presence in the area.”
