THURROCK Council is making a bid for Government funding to build 28 new homes for older people.

The authority’s cabinet agreed to apply to the Care and Support Specialised Housing Fund at its latest meeting.

If successful, the affordable one and two bedroom flats would be built on a vacant site in Derry Avenue, South Ockendon.

The homes would be designed to be “care-ready”, so tenants would not need to go through the upset of moving home once their needs increase.

Cllr Val Morris-Cook, portfolio holder for housing, said: “It’s about everyone in our communities working together to create a better future.

“It’s about making sure everybody has a comfortable and safe home in a community and a neighbourhood where the philosophy is that neighbours look out for and help each other.”
