Huge cranes set for superport

STANFORD-le-Hope’s skyline is set to change forever as three of the world’s largest quay cranes are shipped in to the London Gateway superport.

At 138m tall, the semi-automated cranes are taller than the London Eye and weigh 1,848 tonnes.

The booms are wide enough to allow the cranes to pick up containers 25 rows across the deck, a maximum weight of 80 tonnes.

The cranes, built in Shanghai, have just started their journey from China.

The first berth at the port, off The Manorway, will open by the end of the year with the port being completed in 15 years.
