Shopping centre to have new name

IT’S an Essex institution and even had its own TV series, but after 22 successful years, Lakeside Shopping Centre is changing its name and logo.

The centre will become intu Lakeside in May this year as part of owner Capital Shopping Centre’s £25million rebranding of 12 of its 15 centres.

Most of the shoppers the Gazette spoke to at Lakeside gave the new name the thumbs down.

Sheila Reeve, 65, from Gidea Park, said: “I can’t see the point in just adding another word before Lakeside, I think Lakeside is all you need really.

“Intu Lakeside is not something that strikes a chord with me.”

Francis Matthews, 56, from North Stifford, said: “It’s a bit of a funny name.

“I think people are going to carry on saying Lakeside, but as it has Lakeside in the name I don’t think anyone will be confused. I can’t see how it will attract more people into the centre.”

Alfred Hamilton, 58, from Tower Hamlets, said: “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it, that’s my motto.”

However, pensioner Antony Cross, 77, of Frederick Road, Rainham, said: “I think it’s quite a good name, they need to do something to get more people in here. I hope it works out for them.”

Capital Shopping Centre will spend £7million on brand creation across its centres, £8million on digital infrastructure and £10million creating www.intu.co.uk, which will sell products from centre tenants online. It will also put free WiFi into centres.

A gormless gimmick and everyone will refer to the centre as Lakeside still.

ThurrockResident is spot on. And they're paying £7 million for it? Nice work if you can get it!
A bit off topic but is anyone else getting "you may like" at the end of articles followed by obscure American websites? What's that all about? It's starting to cheese me off.

Absolutely hideous name. Was the person who came up with it smoking weed at the time?

No such word as "intu" What a stupid waste of money ! Why not call it "Workhouse for Slaves to finance families suffering"
With its Such L o n g Opening hours forcing familes to work till to 10pm+ Anti-socially on sundays and even worse every december.
How about the promised Sliproads on/off the A13 eastside before name changing?

Like everyone else says...whats the point will make no difference at all. So if the owner's have millions to waste on advertising then put that to good use - reduce rent, donate some to local charities, better facilities for workers. There must be better ways of ending your splus money than on stupid advertising when there is no need.

who ever the owner is obviously has no intellect and lacks common sense.... it isn't a name or changing a logo that attracts customers its pricing, customers service and the running of the businesses within the shopping centre and as sibbers said facilities, donations but we all know those people are way to brainless to think like that because they simply lack common sense and very little intellect so yet again they just as well have gone to a drain whole and put the £25million down it because that is basically what they have done.

No-one will call it Intu - it will still be just Lakeside. What a waste of money.
