Essex Police issue advice for motorists driving in hazardous conditions
11:41am Monday 21st January 2013 in News
ESSEX Police is urging motorists to take extra care in the hazardous driving conditions this week.
Before they set off, drivers are warned to ensure all their car lights are working and there are no failed bulbs, and all lights are cleared of dirt, salt and snow.
All windows should be fully cleared of snow, frost and condensation, with the polcie keen to remind people that driving with obscured vision is illegal.
Snow should be cleared from the top of the car before a journey begins, otherwise it can fall down on to the windscreen while you are driving, and windscreen washer fluid should be topped up.
Drivers are also urged to ensure they leave enough time for a journey, drive at a constant speed, and have enough fuel.
It is also important to have a mobile phone with you that is fully charged, and if possible have a phone charger in the car.
A spokesman for the force added: “If you get stuck in the snow stay with your car, but in an emergency if you do need to leave it, park it out of the main traffic route, where it won't cause an obstruction when conditions ease.
“Leave a contact number on the inside of the windscreen and return to your car at the first opportunity you have.”
