Historic railway set for revival

A MEETING is being held to whip up support for reviving a piece of Thurrock heritage.

The aim is to have the track bed of the railway, which once took workers from Corringham to Coryton, turned into a heritage walk.

Lisa Sargent, of Stanford-le-Hope, has organised a meeting at the Pegasus Club, in Herd Lane, Corringham, for noon on Sunday.

Anyone interested in getting involved in the project is invited along to the meeting. A group, led by Lisa, will be walking the route at 10am.

So it's not the railway being revived then? Just a footpath being opened.

At the moment funding is being offered by Heritage Lottery for a Walk which would have an area for the children of Herd Lane School to use by FP 22 because of their connection with the original line on the day of closure. Then there will be a museum put at Ironlatch Crossing dedicated to the life of the light railway where the original tracks are still in the old road down there. Hopefully a park will be put along the walk so people can look at the Thames and have the same kind of view people got when riding on the train. There is also plans for a cycle track to meet up with the manorway that then uses London Gateway to head off to Pitsea and Watt Tyler Park. The cycle track is important because when the line closed, it was used as an unofficial cycle track for access to Coryton.
We are still at the very early stages so the website doesn't hold all the key points at present but, even The Corringham Light Railway had to start somewhere.
Please, join us on Sunday.

Good news. The writer of The Corringham Light Railway - A New History will be at the 12pm meeting set for Pegasus Club Annex on Sunday 20th January.
Also, he will be bringing his book to sell so you know where to come to if you need a copy.
Hopefully we will also have a Thurrock Councillor and Museum curator Jonathan Catton at the meeting too. Free tea/coffee will be available too.

Does the land owner want this turned into a nature walk or do they want to sell it off for housing?
