A FREIGHT company has been ordered to pay more than £4,000 after overloading a lorry.

The lorry, owned by Kent based Alberti and Santi UK Ltd, was found to be more than 2,450kg over its permitted weight limit when stopped and checked as part of a Thurrock Council trading standards operation in April.

The company pleaded guilty to four cases of using a vehicle which has exceeded its permitted weight on the highway at Basildon Magistrates Court.

It was fined £1,000 for each offence, and ordered to pay costs of £692 as well as a victim surcharge.

The lorry driver was given a caution.

Thurrock Council’s portfolio holder for public protection, Angie Gaywood, said: “We work with colleagues from VOSA to carry out these checks to ensure vehicles travelling on Thurrock roads are safe.

“With so many major routes we are committed to keeping them safe for our communities.

“ There is never an excuse to flout regulations which are imposed for the safety of drivers and other road users.”
