Barn fire rages through the night

A BARN housing chemical cylinders burned through the night in Aveley yesterday.

Firefighters raced to Sandy Lane just after 8pm and found the barn 20 per cent alight.

They created a hazard zone after discovering the barn, which was used to store machinery, contained acetylene and LPG cylinders, and faced difficulty tackling the fire as it was underneath high voltage cables.

The electricity board was called in to isolate the cables, and by 10pm firefighters were able to increase their efforts to tackle the blaze.

However, they were hampered by a poor water supply, and the four fire engines at the scene had to take it in turns to leave the site to replenish the water tanks.

By 7.15am this morning the fire was out.

Crews have remained on site cooling a cylinder.
