Conservatives: "Addressing Thurrock’s highways and transport issues remains one of our highest priorities as councillors"

THURROCK’S Conservative group said the importance of investment in transport must not be forgotten.

Reacting to the Government’s decision to cancel the funding for the South Essex Rapid Transit project, which would have seen a new bus-based transport system connecting parts of south Essex, including Grays, Basildon and Southend.

Tory transport spokesman, cllr Garry Hague, said: “Given the present economic situation, it is critical that public money is spent in the most cost-effective way possible.

“The Government has looked at SERT again and concluded that it offers poor value for money.

“Addressing Thurrock’s highways and transport issues remains one of our highest priorities as councillors.

“Conservatives will be looking to ensure that new powers brought in by the Government in the Localism and Finance bills are utilised to help secure the vital transport infrastructure investments needed to ensure Thurrock keeps moving, and benefits from the regeneration agenda.”
