Shop thief tried to take advantage of town fire

AN opportunistic thief tried to loot Morrisons supermarket during the chaos caused by the bakery fire in Grays High Street this afternoon.

A 35 year-old man from South Ockendon was seen being chased from the store on London Road by security staff, shortly after headbutting one of them in an attempt to get away.

He was then arrested by Police on suspicion of assault, theft and racially threatening behaviour.

Eye Witness Aston Savage, 17, said: "The man sprinted out of Morrisons followed by security staff, he headbutted one security guard and tried to get away.

"In excess of 10 Morrisons staff chased the man and caught him. the police swiftly followed."

Essex Police spokesperson Tabitha Wilson said: "A 35-year-old man from South Ockendon has been arrested following an incident at the supermarket on London Road this afternoon.

"Police were called about 1.40pm.

"The man is now in police custody."
