Personal Overview - Politically hardened campaigner who narrowly missed selection for Kensington & Chelsea following the death of Alan Clarke (the mantle assumed by Michael Portillo), and for the Tory banker, Devon East in 2000. Rayleigh is more than adequate compensation, having had a majority exceeding 10,000 even in the Conservative Annus Horibilis of 1997. An academic and practical involvement in defence issues is his principal non-political activity, as a student of King's College, and a TA member with the King's Anglian Regiment. He is Essex-bred (if not born), giving him a natural affinity with his parliamentary base. Could only translate his former position in the Shadow Cabinet into the role of a Government Whip in the initial May 2010 Government lineup before being promoted to Minister of State level in 2012.

Soil and Water Conservation Officer for the Ministry of Agriculture in Rhodesia (1975-76), Rhodesian Army (1975-76). Employed on the family farm (1977-83). Personal Overview - Elected to the European Parliament in 2009 from second place on the party list. Experienced farmer who has since 1983 ran his family farm in Norfolk. Has been active within the National Farmers Union in Norfolk for a number of years. He is well travelled, having worked in India, South Africa and Rhodesia (Zimbabwe).
